History

Cane Corso could be a really legendary breed, as a result, these are direct descendants of Roman fighting dogs. It belongs to the working dog kind and could be a “cousin” to the port working dog. several dog breeders believe that the breed originated naturally however with the assistance of human intervention. we will say that folks intervened within the method at a particular stage of development and directed it in the right direction.

The Cane Corso has modified very little in 2000 years. And, each outwardly and internally. Nobility, devotion, and fearlessness are inherent in them moreover as their illustrious ancestors, though within the Middle Ages the breed was primarily used not in war, but in looking and farming. With them, they visited a game, primarily a swine, used as a guard after they brought cows to the market, and as a watcher for her house. In alternative words, the medieval inhabitants of European countries used dogs that lived in the country from past times.

Dogs interbred with each other, often freely, but the Cane Corso breed began to develop fully under serious, professional human control only in the 1970s when the mechanization of agriculture and the reduction of farmland in Italy led to a sharp decline in the number of these dogs. At that point, breeders made efforts to keep cane Corso from extinction, and they began to maintain a uniform breed standard.

In 1983, enthusiasts of the breed created a community of owners — “Amatori Cane Corso”, which was engaged in the standardization and maintenance of the breed. Official recognition of cane Corso was received in 1996, which, in fact, is even somewhat strange, given the deep historical roots of these dogs.

The word “canis” in Latin is a dog, and the word “Corso” is most likely derived from “cohors”, which means “bodyguard”, but can also come from the old Italian word “corsus”, which means “strong” or “reliable”.

Breed Information

Description

The Cane Corso breed is a large-sized, massive, muscular, and well-coordinated dog with the physique of an athlete. A dog with a wide head and a short muzzle, with a black nose and strong jaws.

The thorax is wide, pronounced, like the abdominal cavity, and the limbs are of medium length, with a good drawing of the muscles. The ears are often stopped, the tail is medium, and the coat is short and glossy.

Personality

The Cane Corso breed has a noble, balanced character and is not exchanged for trifles. These dogs retain the pride and strength of their great ancestors, as can be seen at a glance. The Cane Corso breed is exceptionally devoted to its family, and if you are looking for a family companion who would combine all the best qualities of a strong and intelligent dog, this is what you need.

Basically, they are distinguished by obedience, devotion, high intelligence, and a soft, kind character. They are cool and can remain calm even if another dog tries to freak out, but if it still comes to a fight, then the cane Corso will be in the battle to the last and will not retreat even in front of a superior opponent. Their kindness and friendliness are directed primarily within their family, or — to the owner of the pet who lives with one person.

Strangers, friends of the owners are of little interest to him, so to speak — “as much, as much”. Sometimes it may even seem that he does not particularly notice other people and animals until they come close to him — then the dog notes the presence of an alien creature, and makes sure that this very creature does not even in his thoughts have to harm people close to him.

Thanks to the huge past and comprehensive experience that is laid down in the genes, the breed can perform a wide variety of functions. It all depends on what the owner needs. Cane Corso can be a protector, a watchman, help with hunting, or just be a good friend. In any case, the dog will show itself in the best way.

But we should not forget that this animal is with great inner strength, and therefore, it will try the strength the character of the owner. So to speak — to study the boundaries of what is permissible. Consequently, cane Corso is not recommended for inexperienced and indecisive owners, since the owner must sometimes be able to firmly put himself in the position of leader. Children are treated with kindness, without aggression.

Need early socialization, acquaintance with other people and animals to expand horizons, with cats they are also better introduced at an early age. They have a fairly high level of energy and love walking, active games, and physical activity. Without activity, without classes, and loving people nearby, the dog quickly begins to wither, his character deteriorates, he can stop eating normally or, on the contrary, turn into a glutton, literally “eating” longing, like people.

Teaching

The Cane Corso dog breed is very intelligent, and therefore it can be taught a lot of different commands. In addition, if you create the right relationship with your pet, sometimes you do not even need a command — the dog will already understand what the owner wants from him. On the other hand, this requires proper education — this is a firm position of the leader.

To achieve this, try to use commands more often in everyday life, for example, if you want to give the animal a tasty treat, the first command is “sit”, and only after following the command reward your pet. Also, at an early age, you will have to face attempts at dominance, and here you will also need to prove yourself as a strong and confident leader. Aggression and negative attitude are unacceptable since the dog will not love and respect you.

Just do not give toys until the pet follows the command, delay the meal if he does not want to obey you or behaves disgustingly, do not hesitate to scold him and behave strictly when necessary, and most importantly, never be afraid of your dog. If you do not know how to be confident next to a large dog, it is better to get a small one. Another tip is to develop independence and self-confidence, starting from adolescence, leave the pet alone, for a short time, in an apartment or in the yard, if you have a private house. It’s going to be good for him.

Care

Cane Corso is a smooth-haired breed, and therefore it almost does not need to care for the coat. Comb it 1 time per week and bathe also at least 1 time per week. Always make sure your dog’s ears and eyes are clean and trim the claws three times a month.

This breed requires at least 90 minutes of exercise a day to keep your muscles in tip-top shape.

Common diseases

The Cane Corso is a very healthy breed, and the owners of these dogs rarely go to the veterinarian. But some problems still occur:

  • hip dysplasia;
  • entropion;
  • ectropion;
  • cherry eye;
  • demodectic scabies (can be inherited);
  • gastric twisting, also known as “volvulus”.
